First there is a very fine Western about the son of a murdered bad guy who is raised as a fine gentleman. The story is about a bet between sister and brother whether genetics is stronger and the child will turn bad like his father or environment shall prove stronger and the child will become an outstanding citizen.The second story leads two young Western men, thrown together by circumstances, to New York City where they encounter a crime boss and his minions while trying to rescue to damsels in distress.
Both are fine Western stories and worthy reading.

Interesting in the beginning but seem to drag out half way through the book. Not very believable characters.
love Max Brand's westerns - black Jack has very good character development, good story of how the blood in the father
is also in the son.
Some more adventure that kept me reading for to long every single night ! LOL But it was worth it to enjoy the growing up of a young man to be what he always really wanted to be !!
The Large Print Classic Western Library books are a wonderful source for "the good ole days" stories by authors such as Max Brand. I don't have to cringe at unacceptable language or settings when I give my 95-yr old mother-in-law one of these beautiful, large-print, bold-text books. With limited sight and mobility, there are dwindling options for entertainment. These books fill a large void.
I enjoyed this book. My only complaint is it ended so abruptly leaving story threads cut off.
A typical Max Brand easy read. My dad used to read Max Brand westerns when I was a young kid. I decided to try this one and can see why he read them. Fast read and you can lose your self in it. It is not as realistic as newer westerns though. If you like the old western writers you will like this book (actually two stories).
This is the first Max Brand book I've read since I was a kid. He was one of the masters of western story telling.
This is the classic tale of good versus evil, only in this story they happen to be the same guy. The book starts out strong, with our hero being set up to fail by his adopted uncle. With this failure he then turned out by his adopted mother and starts down the outlaw trail. This is a great story and holds together well, all the way to the end. The story ends rather abruptly, with some unanswered questions and one sentance explainations. It almost seemed like the author just ran out of steam. It is a worth while book, but don't expect a large suspenseful ending.
